The Daily Tar Heel

I work as an Audience Engagement Staffer for The Daily Tar Heel, UNC’s independent student newspaper. My job is to curate content that resonates. People lead insanely busy lives that push them away from even the most interesting of news stories; it’s my job to pull them back in. When making social media posts and writing our “At a Glance” newsletter, it’s necessary to choose stories and information that snag viewers' attention so they want to read more. Working for The DTH has taught me the importance of audience engagement and social media to an organization, and I’ve learned critical skills while working in a team. I love working for The DTH with my fellow AE staffers; it’s been one of the most rewarding experiences in my time at UNC, and I know I will carry what I’ve learned throughout my professional experiences.

Social Media Posts

I create posts and captions for Instagram, X, Facebook, and Threads to inform viewers and bring in engagement. Here’s an example of the posts I would create for one story!

“Tar Heels share their tips for fighting back against the flu”

It's always a GDTBATH — and a bad day to get the flu.

Typically starting in October, flu season only adds to the various illnesses already spreading around college campuses, such as COVID-19, mono and stomach bugs. These viruses thrive in areas where people are in close proximity with one another, and college living situations often epitomize this type of close contact.

Every student has their own method to avoid getting sick, ranging from mixing vitamin C packets with their water to wearing a mask.

Michelle Camarena, the director of Nursing and Performance Improvement at Campus Health, said that getting the flu vaccine is the best way for people on college campuses to avoid getting sick. UNC students can receive their flu vaccine at the student store pharmacy, Campus Health pharmacy or at various walk-in clinics across campus without any appointment.
